As usual major vendors have used this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to unveil their latest smartphone lines.
HMD Global has used the event to announce the launch of five new Nokia-branded phones, including a revamp of the classic Nokia 8110 with 4G connectivity.
The new Nokia 8110 feature phone will include apps such as Google Assistant, Maps and search, as well as Facebook and Twitter, and mark a return of the slider form factor. It will also come with a revamped version of Snake. It will launch from May at a global average retail price of €79 ($97).
HMD Global's new handset line-up also includes four new Android smartphones – the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, and a new Nokia 6 and Nokia 1.
The flagship Nokia 8 Sirocco has a thickness of just 2mm, and uses Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and a 5.5-inch pOLED 2K display. It comes with a wide-angle primary camera and a 13MB secondary camera with 2x optical zoom. It will launch in early April at ana average global retail price of a hefty €749.
The Nokia 7 Plus has a 6-inch 18:9 Full HD+ display, a 12MP wide-angle primary camera and a 13MP secondary camera. It will reach the market in April at an average retail price of €379. The new Nokia 6 will launch in early April for a global average retail of €279, while the Nokia 1 will be available from May at an average price of €79.
Samsung meanwhile announced its new flagship Galaxy S9 and S9+ smartphones. The handsets make only incremental improvements to the previous generation, such as a new position for the fingerprint sensor below the rear camera.
The 12MP rear camera is a key selling point for the new devices, with support for Super Slow Motion video filmed at 960 frames per second, a variable aperture for superior adaptation to low light conditions and a secondary telephoto lens for the S9+.
Other key features include support for augmented reality emojis that scan a user's face to generate the animated image, and the integration of the Bixby virtual assistant with the device's camera to achieve functionality such as automatic translations of words and the ability to scan food and receive nutritional information such as calorie counts.
ZTE also unveiled its new ZTE Blade V9 smartphone. The Android 8.1 smartphone has a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display, a 16MP dual lens low-light rear camera and an 8MP front camera.
The device sports a fingerprint sensor, VoLTE support and LTE plus Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n connectivity.
The ZTE Blade V9 will launch in China, Spain, Germany, Russia and Mexico. It will support NFC payment functionality except in China and Mexico.
In other device categories, Huawei has unveiled the MateBook X Pro, a new 13.9-inch notebook with a 3K touchscreen display and a 91% screen to body ratio, as well as the MediaPad M5 tablet series in 8.4-inch and 10.8 inch display form factors.
The company also announced the first 5G CPE compatible with all 5G frequency bands and capable of supporting download speeds of up to 2Gbps.
