Globe supports controversial anti-piracy bill

Philippine telecoms operator Globe has thrown its support behind a controversial proposed anti-piracy bill that would allow the nation's telecoms regulator to revoke the licenses of ISPs that have failed to prevent content piracy and copyright infringement.

The bill currently before the Senate would require ISPs to block access to known piracy sites or face being put out of business, state-owned Philippine News Agency announced.

Under the proposal, regulator NTC's Intellectual Property Office would be empowered to force ISPs to take reasonable steps to disable access to sites that have been reported to be infringing copyright, or facilitating copyright infringement.

The office would then have the power to recommend to the NTC that non-compliant ISPs have their licenses canceled.

Globe Telecom has expressed support for the proposed bill. The operator's CEO Ernest Cu, who recently joined the board of the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA), said the operator will “continue to support efforts that will help stop online piracy.”

AVIA recently commenced a campaign against the sale of illicit streaming devices and apps that can be used to stream pirated video content.
