The Philippines' Globe Telecom has teamed up with the nation's Tourism Promotions Board to offer free SIMs to tourists visiting the nation.
The operator is offering the prepaid Globe Traveler SIM to allow tourists to make calls, send texts and consume mobile data at affordable rates.
Subscribing to a TravelSurf mobile data plan costs $11 for seven days or $23 for 30 days. Overseas calls start at $0.40 per minute.
Foreign visitors will be able to claim a free SIM by presenting a non-Philippine passport or related identification at any Globe booths in the main Philippines airports.
The promotion forms part of the Visit the Philippines Year 2015 campaign, which aims to drive up tourism in the nation.
Between January and May there were 2.23 million international visitors to the Philippines, up over 8% from the same period last year year. Tourism generated 93.9 billion pesos in revenue for those five months.
“We are happy to be the first telco partner of the Tourism Promotions Board in their thrust to make the Philippines the ultimate destination hub for tourists worldwide,” Globe SVP of international business Rizza Maniego-Eala said.
“Offering free SIMs is our way of helping travelers further enjoy their stay by enabling easy, affordable and hassle-free communications.”
