The Philippines' Globe Telecom has announced plans to introduce eSIM technology to the nation.

The operator is currently running tests of eSIM technology with devices including the iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and XR; Apple Watch and Huawei Watch.

The company will introduce the iPhone devices this month and the Apple Watch and Huawei Watch shortly, and will distribute a QR code to Globe stores by the end of the year that customers with eSIM devices will be able to use to activate the eSIM.

Globe SVP and head of consumer mobile Issa Guevarra-Cabreira said the deployment will put the Philippines ahead of the game in terms of eSIM adoption. The technology is currently only available in ten markets including Singapore, the US, the UK and Canada.

“With the introduction of eSIM, Globe further strengthens its position as the country's mobile innovation leader,” she said.

“This new technology enhances our customers' experience and the way they live their digital lifestyle.”

Guevarra-Cabreira added that adopting eSIM technology is consistent with the operator's initiative to reduce plastic use as part of its sustainability commitments. Eliminating the need for a physical SIM will reduce the extra plastic and paper packaging and the generation of solid waste.
