Globe Telecom has expanded its machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions in the Philippines, making way for enterprises to better manage and secure their fleets and fixed assets and paving the way for greater collaboration with the government.

In a launch held this week, Globe demonstrated the new applications that seek to help local businesses gain better control of and manage their operations better.

Its first M2M service -- a GPS tracking device for trucks and company vehicles introduced in 2008 -- made it easy for fleet managers to monitor the location of their moving vehicles in real time and check whether they were traveling in the intended route or if they reached their destination on time.

This service, said Jesus Romero, head of Globe Business, has since been expanded to include new applications such as monitoring fixed assets and providing security and surveillance. Aside from vehicles, the new solution now includes tracking contents of cargo trucks, tanks, freezers, machineries, vending machines, armored cars and ATM machines, among others.

Romero said the most significant achievement of the fleet management services so far is the prevention of hijacking incidents on the road for delivery trucks or other vehicles carrying valuable cargo.

"Because the route (of the vehicles) is defined in the management system, when an incident happens, it automatically triggers an incident report that makes it easy for us to coordinate with the Philippine National Police," he said, adding that depending on how the application was customized for the company, an alarm could also be triggered in the police headquarters.
