The Philippines' Globe Telecom has joined the ranks of mobile operators worldwide responding to the disruptive increase in popularity of OTT services.

The operator has added unlimited access to popular messaging services to its GoUNLI30 daily prepaid plan.

Customers using the 30 peso ($0.68) per day plan will be able to make use of Viber, Facebook Messenger, Kakao, WeChat, WhatsApp, Line and other services without incurring data charges.

The plan also offers unlimited texts and in-network calls. A separate OTT chat only plan is available for 25 pesos per day.

Globe Telecom had around 34.2 million prepaid subscribers as of end-June, and a total mobile customer base of 36.1 million.

Operators across the world are taking steps to address the treat OTT services poses to the mobile business model.

Vietnam's prime minister last week weighed into the debate, suggesting that the government will introduce policies aimed at managing OTT services.

China's three mobile operators have developed their own answers to WeChat and other OTT services. China Unicom partnered with WeChat owner Tencent for a WeChat plan, China Telecom has set up a JV with Netease to develop a rival service, and China Mobile is pouring funds into revamping OTT service Fetion.

A recent survey meanwhile indicated that mobile operators remain unconvinced that GSMA-backed branded RCS offering Joyn is the key to competing with OTT messaging.
