India-based Reliance Globalcom has upgraded its FA-1 North trans-Atlantic subsea cable to 100G wavelengths, using equipment from Ciena.

The cable, which runs along the New York to London Corridor, now has an initial lit capacity of 400Gbps.

Globalcom contracted Ciena for the upgrade in March. The vendor deployed its converged packet optical and GeoMesh cable products for the project.

Globalcom had already upgraded the FA-1 South New York to Paris route using Ciena's GeoMesh technology.

The deployment was aimed at meeting the soaring demand for increased capacity worldwide, according to Globalcom CEO Punit Garg.

“Growing requirements for access speed in broadband internet, the digitalization of information, and cloud-based applications continue to drive... bandwidth demand,” he said.

“By making strategic upgrades [such as this], we are ensuring that we meet this demand in a highly-efficient and cost-effective manner.”
