First GSM-LTE dynamic spectrum sharing trial completed

Vodafone Spain and Huawei yesterday announced they have conducted the world’s first GSM-LTE dynamic spectrum sharing (GL DSS) trial.

Competition is fierce for LTE spectrum resources, especially for bandwidths including 1.8 GHz. Several operators, including Vodafone, currently hold bandwidths of 20 MHz at 1.8 GHz, of which 10 MHz is used for LTE and the rest for high GSM traffic.

Huawei’s single radio controller, the company said, brings flexibility to spectrum resource allocation by introducing GL DSS. By applying interference scheduling in real time, the SRC gives GSM higher priority to use spectrum in periods of heavy traffic, providing protection against GSM voice interference.

The trial verified GL DSS performance in the Vodafone Spain commercial network, with results showing that this solution can reach LTE capacity gains of up to 50%, making 15 MHz effectively available for LTE with limited impact to GSM services.

Huawei has deployed 50+ GSM/LTE refarming networks worldwide. SRC (GL DSS) accelerates GSM to LTE refarming and enhances pace of LTE deployment for a better mobile broadband user experience.
