Maxis downloads at 104Mbps in LTE trial
Maxis said it was able to demonstrate an LTE connection with peak download speed of 60-104Mbps in Malaysia's first successful LTE trial. The test, which used both 10MHz and 20MHz bandwidth channels, was done with Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei.
Telstra, Nokia Siemens Networks hit 100Mbps in LTE trial
Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks said they achieved peak speeds of 100Mbps download and 31Mbps upload over a record-breaking distance of 75 kilometres in Victoria, Australia. The trial used the latter’s LTE-ready Flexi Multiradio Base Station and Evolved Packet Core, with pre-commercial LTE USB dongles from third-party vendors.
Ericsson seals $242m buy out of LG-Nortel majority
Ericsson has completed the acquisition at $242 million of Nortel's majority shareholding in LG-Nortel, the joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel Networks. The joint venture includes important contracts with Korean operators such as KT, LG Telecom and SK Telecom.
SmarTone-Vodafone launches service for tablets
SmarTone-Vodafone has launched its Tablet Micro-SIM Data Plan, which provides mobile broadband to users of tablet devices such as the iPad 3G. The plan requires an 18-month contract and includes unlimited local data usage and unlimited access to Wi-Fi hotspots in Hong Kong.
Softbank Mobile offers free femtocells
Ubiquisys is supplying Softbank Mobile with femtocell access points meant to be offered for free along with free ADSL connections to residential, retail and small office based customers. Ubiquisys CEO Chris Gilbert said making femtocells free for consumers has long been considered critical for widespread adoption.
ZTE bags supply deal with Indonesian firm
ZTE has signed an exclusive contract with Indonesian operator Smart Telecom to supply key equipment for the deployment of a country-wide network framework. ZTE will deliver some 6,000 base stations to Smart Telecom to cover the whole of Indonesia, with a total system capacity of over 25 million lines.
