KDDI develops a phone to make it easier for drivers in Japan to use car navigation and other services. KDDI said the mobile phone, called "TiMO," developed with car giant Toyota Motor, will go on sale by October.

Irish low-budget airline Ryanair signs a deal that would allow passengers to begin using mobile phones during flights next year. Ryanair said that communications firm OnAir would fit the carrier's entire fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft with onboard mobile technology from 2008 to allow passengers to send SMS and use phones during flights.

Motorola bares plans to develop mobile WiMAX chipsets for use in Motorola's next-generation devices. Motorola's initial chipset will focus on core 802.16e mobile WiMAX functionality supporting voice, video, and data for low power mobile applications in handsets and modules and will be available in 2008.

Convergys, a provider of customer care, human resources, and billing services, wins a 5-year professional services outsourcing contract with Taiwan's Vibo Telecom. Under the deal, Convergys will manage the 3G mobile operator's back-office operations.
