RIM makes Top 5

Research In Motion (RIM) has entered the mobile phone top five for the first time as the global handset market grew 22% year-on-year in the first quarter, according to IDC. RIM shipped 10.6 million units, 45% more than a year ago.

Ovi Store averages 1.7m downloads daily

Nokia said its Ovi Store is now averaging 1.7 million downloads daily barely a year after its debut. CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said there are now localized versions of the Ovi Store in 18 countries, supporting 30 different languages.

BlackBerry Partners Fund invests in Aepona

Software firm Aepona said Toronto-based BlackBerry Partners Fund has led a new $10-million investment round in the company. Existing Aepona investors Amadeus Capital Partners, Polaris Ventures, Innovacom, Nordic Venture Partners and Sutter Hill Ventures also participated in the round.

StarHub expands mobile TV service with Envivio

StarHub has installed the Envivio Mobile TV head-end -- featuring the 4Caster C4 Three Screens encoder/transcoder -- to extend the reach of the “StarHub TV on Mobile” service to more 3G mobile customers. VP Yeong Mun Ling said customers can enjoy StarHub services “even on the most sophisticated playback devices such as the iPhone.”

North Am developers hit 30/70 revenue split: Evans Data

Four out of every five developers in North America think they should receive more than 30% of the revenue generated by their apps in an app store, according to the Spring North American Development Survey. Evans Data said over 70% of respondents were also against app store-imposed restrictions on price and content.

LiMo Foundation said the Korea LiMo Ecosystem Association has been launched in Seoul. The new group is aimed at catalyzing the Korean mobile application developer ecosystem and generating innovation upon the LiMo platform.

China Telecom, RIM launch BlackBerry in China

China Telecom and Research In Motion (RIM) have launched the BlackBerry solution for the formers' enterprise customers in China. Running across China Telecom’s EVDO 3G network, the solution will be marketed with the operator's “E Surfing” 3G service and will initially be launched in 16 provinces.
