Facebook, Ericsson and Indonesia's XL Axiata have jointly developed a new methodology to improve network performance based on application use cases.

The companies said that using Facebook application test cases and Ericsson network monitoring they were able to improve app coverage by up to 70%.

The Internet.org initiative involved the development of a series of KPIs based on simulated Facebook application use cases, that can be correlated with network statistics.

Results of the test show that the time to content and the number of connections completed within three seconds both improved by up to 70%, while upload time increased by up to 50%.

“We believe this is the first time that an operator, network technology provider and application provider have cooperated on such a project,” XL Axiata CEO Hasnul Suhaimi said.

“Recently the use of data services in Indonesia has increased significantly and is expected to continue into the future... We believe app coverage is essential and correlating Facebook application use cases with network-wide statistics has proven to be an innovative and efficient way to detect and address network optimization opportunities.”

Facebook and Ericsson were among the founding members of Internet.org, an initiative that aims to bring affordable internet access to the entire world.
