Huawei Technologies unveiled yesterday eight new 3G devices in a bid to strengthen its position in the global 3G phone market.

Among the new products is an HSDPA USB modem, the E220, which the company claims is the world's smallest and fastest, delivering data at speeds up to 3.6 Mbps.

The company also unveiled two new UMTS 3G dual-mode handsets - the U528 and U526 - targeting young people and five low-end cdma2000 1X mobile phones.

Tang Xiaoyun, Huawei's product marketing director for the wireless terminal product line, said the company recorded $700 million of sales in handsets last year and expected this to grow to $1.2 billion this year.

The company has also ramped up production of CDMA handsets this year in order to boost its market share in countries like India, he said, adding that the company shipped more than three million CDMA handsets last year.

'Last year we launched only two CDMA handsets and this year we will launch 20, some of which have already shipped to India,' Tang said.
