US-based data center operator Equinix today announced plans to set up a new International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Osaka, which will be launched in Q4 of 2013.

This follows Equinix's recent announcement to build its fourth IBX data center in Tokyo in response to high demand for data center services in Japan. The total investment for Phase 1 of the Osaka data center will be $12 million.

Coined OS1, the data center will be directly connected to Dojima, the network core in Osaka, thereby strengthening OS1's global network connectivity in Osaka.

OS1 will provide total capacity of 32,000 sq ft and over 800 cabinets equivalents. The first phase, scheduled to open in Q4 2013, will provide an initial capacity of 320 cabinets.

According to Equinix, OS1 can serve as an option for business continuity planning outside of Tokyo with its seismically isolated infrastructure and central location in Osaka, minimizing the risk and damage from floods and earthquakes.

In Asia Pacific, Equinix currently operates data centers in Tokyo (TY1, TY2 & TY3. TY4 to be opened in August 2013), Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore (SG1 & SG2), Jakarta (JK1) and Sydney (SY1, SY2 & SY3).

Equinix will build OS1, its first data center in western Japan, in collaboration with access provider K-Opticom and Kanden Energy Solutions (Kenes).
