Interconnection and data center company Equinix has revealed plans to expand its global presence to South Korea via the opening of a new data center in Seoul.

The carrier-neutral SL1 data center will provide interconnection and colocation services to local and multinational businesses with a presence in the market to support their cloud migration and digital transformation initiatives.

The new facility will provide around 1,680 square meters of colocation space with an initial capacity of 550 cabinets in the first phase.

SL1 is due to open in the third quarter. Once complete, the facility will form part of Equinix's global network of International Business Exchange (IBX) branded facilities.

“Equinix’s announcement of a new data center in South Korea strengthens its place as a major data center player in Asia-Pacific. This expansion represents the next step in the company’s global build out of its colocation and interconnectivity footprint to strategic cities and the edge,” IDC Asia-Pacific associate research director for data center and enterprise infrastructure Glen Duncan said.

“The new data center will be of particular interest to global customers with interests in South Korea as well as local enterprises seeking to connect with a global digital ecosystem beyond South Korea’s borders.”
