Japan's KDDI has launched a new 10Gbps symmetrical internet service using equipment from US-based vendor DASAN Zhone Solutions (DZS).

The new offering is a 10G Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) service for customers with high bandwidth requirements.

DZS is supplying the equipment for the service through system integrator and domestic sales agent Kyocera Communications Systems, a KDDI affiliate that offers a broad portfolio of engineering and management consulting services.

Last month NEC also announced it is providing 10G-EPON equipment for KDDI's au Hikari Home 10 giga ultra-high-speed home broadband service. NEC is providing optical line terminal and optical network unit systems for the service.

DZS said the company is targeting strong growth in Japan over the next three years as the market's operators invest heavily to ensure their networks are ready to meet anticipated demand during the 2020 Toyko Summer Olympic Games.
