Netflix has firmed up plans to enter India by 2016 after Singapore-based on-demand Internet video provider Hooq launched in the country, the Times of India reported.

The Times said this has sent major domestic DTH players chalking out strategies to diversify beyond television, with iconic shows cued up for various mobile devices across iOS and Android.

The Times quoted a Tata Sky spokesperson as saying that Netflix’s entry into India was like that of Starbucks. “Everybody knew about it but cafe brands were late to react and Starbucks came and stole the show (so we) don't want to be caught on the wrong foot.”

The Mumbai-based company is in talks with various providers of content such as TV shows or movies that would be made available across iOS and Android platforms for a fee.
