Japan's NTT DoCoMo has announced plans to launch the nation's first VoLTE service in late June.
The company will upgrade its Xi LTE-Advanced network to support VoLTE through a software upgrade, making the service initially available for four smartphones and two tablets in its summer line-up.
DoCoMo's existing Xi data plans, including flat-rate packet plans, will apply for VoLTE voice traffic. DoCoMo will also waive packet charges for VoLTE video traffic until September 2015, after which video calls will incur both voice and packet charges.
The operator's newly-announced summer mobile device line-up also includes smartphones equipped for 4K video recording and playback, devices using the H.265/HEVC data compression standard and a new line of accessories including wearable devices.
DoCoMo separately announced plans to establish five new business units as part of an organizational restructuring.
The company intends to form a new R&D strategy department and a service innovation department – both under the new R&D innovation division – a service design department, a frontline support department and a billing service department.
Announcing the move, DoCoMo said it expects that the new units “will strengthen and accelerate the creation of services that will enable customers to enjoy smarter living through innovative mobile solutions.”
