NTT DoCoMo and Tokyo Institute of Technology have revealed they achieved what they claim is the world's first 10 Gbps uplink rate during a trial in Okinawa.
Announcing the experiment to coincide with Mobile World Congress, DoCoMo and the Institute said they transmitted 400 MHz of bandwidth in the 11 GHz band from a moving mobile station during the December trial.
The trial used MIMO technology to spatially multiplex different data streams using 8 transmitting antennas and 16 receiving antennas on the same frequency.
DoCoMo said it is researching achieving 10 Gbps plus transmission speeds on super-high-frequency bands above 5 GHz, in response to the squeeze on the remaining spectrum allocated to mobile driven by the surge in data traffic.
But the limited distance of these high frequency bands have rendered them difficult to use in mobile networks, particularly in urban areas.
DoCoMo said the technologies being experimented with are applicable to downlink traffic as well as uplink.
