Malaysia’s DiGi has revealed that smartphone adoption reached 25% of its total customer base in the third quarter.

The operator published quarterly results showing that in Q3, mobile internet customers - which also comprise customers who use feature-phones - increased to 5.6 million from 5.4 million.

Data revenue accounted for close to 31% of DiGi's total service revenue in the first nine months of the current financial year, announced CEO Henrik Clausen.

As of March, the Telenor outpost has 9.9 million subscribers. Malaysia has a population of 29 million and mobile penetration of 129%.

DiGi is halfway through its $229-$245 million network modernisation programme to cater to the increased demand from data users.

For the quarter under review, DiGi recorded 3.4% growth in data revenue to $150 million (RM460 million) compared to RM445 million in the second quarter this year. Data revenue for the first nine months of the year also increased to $430 million (RM1,353 million), a growth of 15.6% from RM1,170 million recorded in the same period last year.

DiGi's revenue grew to $517 million (RM1,583 million) while its EBITDA and EBITDA margin stood at $233 million (RM715 million) and 45.2% respectively. Profit after tax was $103 million (RM315 million) while operating cash flow remained strong at $185 million (RM565 million) as of 30 September 2012.
