Success with mobile value added services (MVAS) can be a welcome remedy for decreasing ARPU, but as the hunger for services increases, especially for more sophisticated rich 3G data services, accommodating heavy data-driven traffic can drain network bandwidth. Pressure builds to add capacity quickly without expensive and time-consuming build-outs.

Bandwidth optimization has become an attractive option to gain a competitive advantage because it can increase bandwidth availability and overall network efficiency while reducing capital and operational costs. It is valuable as an ongoing tactic to ensure that an existing network is used as cost-effectively as possible, and can provide short term relief until longer term strategies can be put in place, if required.

Backhaul optimization especially valuable

Because of their ancestry, backhaul segments in the mobile network can easily become especially glaring bottlenecks as the pace of data traffic accelerates. Backhaul segments were originally built on TDM transport technologies because the segments had to meet the stringent requirements for voice services. In addition, cell sites worldwide generally continue to have native T1/E1 interfaces with cell towers and base stations.

Since backhaul segments can be very expensive to build out (as much as 20% to 25% of total network cost), optimizing backhaul is particularly important.

An optimizer that can double backhaul capacity

Knowing the importance of backhaul optimization, Dialogic focused on this area, and its team of optimization experts, with over two decades of experience in optimization techniques, has created the Dialogic® I-Gate® 4000 Session Bandwidth Optimizer Mobile Backhaul. In recent field trials, the I-Gate 4000 SBO MB typically doubles mobile backhaul capacity while maintaining Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for Quality of Experience (QoE) and for satisfying Service Level Agreements (SLA) requirements.

The I-Gate 4000 SBO MB optimizes both Abis (2G) and Iub (3G) data streams and supports multiple topologies. It provides 99.9995% (five-nines) availability through a compact, fully redundant 1 RU platform, and includes GUI-based management with runtime reports showing traffic mix, comparative bandwidth, and Quality of Service (QoS) behavior.

We invite you to go to www.dialogic.com/mobilebackhaul to access Adding Capacity Cost-Effectively to the Mobile Network with Bandwidth Optimization, a new white paper from Dialogic, and Backhaul Optimization for Cost-Effective Capacity Expansion, a Q&A with Bill Rojas, a Director of Telecom Research for IDC Asia/Pacific. The IDC report includes a revealing section on backhaul optimization and ROI with facts and figure. You can also contact Dialogic for a free assessment of your particular network situation with a detailed analysis that can help you quantify the benefits of mobile backhaul optimization accurately. Dialogic continues to invest in the future of mobile VAS

In November 2010, Dialogic proudly announced plans to open a video design and development center in Noida, India to be led by Sanjay Singh, a communications industry veteran and previous Managing Director of Dilithium Networks in India. The video center complements Dialogic’s other continued investments in the future of MVAS in the areas of network optimization and media processing. The innovations created from the video center will become part of Dialogic® products worldwide, and benefit video service providers all over the world.
