Dell reportedly plans to design an Android-powered smartphone for US mobile operator AT&T.

The IT vendor is planning a US launch for the handset by as soon as early next year, inside sources told the Wall Street Journal.

It would be AT&T’s first Android phone, and, if confirmed, the news means all four major US mobile operators will have Android-powered phones either in their line-ups or in the pipeline.

America's largest wireless carrier, Verizon, this week announced it would partner with Google to develop Android handsets for its own customers.

The rumored device, which will include a touch screen and a digital camera, would be Dell's first entry into the US handset market.

And Dell is reportedly talking with other US operators, such as the Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile USA, about offering the device.

As of this week, nine Android devices have been officially announced across 32 carriers in 26 countries, Google said.
