Global revenues for DDoS prevention solutions will end the 2011 year up 52% compared to 2010, a new report said.

The report from Infonetics Research also said all segments of the DDoS prevention appliance market are forecast to grow at a 23% compound annual growth rate during the five years from 2010 to 2015 with mobile leading with a 42% CAGR.

“Without a doubt, the number-one driver for the DDoS prevention market is the attacks themselves. From the Iranian elections, to Wikileaks and the Anonymous army attacking anything with a whirring fan, DDoS attacks have been big news for the last two years,” said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst.

The rise of botnets and easy-to-use tools (like LOIC) for launching attacks means that there are more DDoS attacks pushing greater volumes of traffic, initiated by a wider variety of attackers than ever before, he said.

“As a result, revenue for DDoS prevention appliances is growing fast, particularly in the mobile network segment, which will see the most explosive growth as it rides the compound wave of a transition to IP and data, massive increases in capacity, and a new role as a juicy and highly visible target for attacks,” the analyst said.

The report further said Arbor Networks leads the overall DDoS prevention appliance market as well as some (but not all) of the segments by deployment location.

Currently, traditional carrier transport networks make up the largest segment of the DDoS prevention appliance market in terms of global revenue and deployments of DDoS prevention appliances to protect data centers are rapidly rising, the report added.
