CommScope has announced it is supporting its customers’ increasing Power over Ethernet (PoE) needs by introducing new software capabilities in imVision, its automated infrastructure management (AIM) system.

The enhanced imVision capability enables IT managers to keep track of the location of PoE powered devices while providing more visibility into where PoE services are and can be deployed.

PoE technology is on a rapid growth trajectory. A recent report by Grand View Research projects the global PoE market to exceed $3.75 billion by 2025.

A Data Center Journal article estimates that the number of PoE ports installed globally is already over 100 million. Meanwhile, approval of the four-pair PoE standard is expected next year, leading the way for an additional 45 million devices to be powered by the network.

“Serving the intelligent building marketplace today demands support for PoE and an ecosystem approach that brings technology leaders together to deliver best-in-class solutions,” CommScope VP of enterprise for Asia-Pacific Gavin Milton-White said.

“CommScope’s networking experts work in standards organizations to help evolve PoE standards and directly with partners and customers to provide efficient PoE delivery solutions.”

PoE growth trends are due to the ongoing explosion of IoT devices in the building—LED lighting systems, security cameras, wireless access points, etc.—as well as the convergence of IT and building operations technology. PoE technology safely transmits electricity along with data over twisted pair cabling to remote devices. Most people initially came to know PoE through the use of VoIP telephones, which were the first, massively deployed devices to utilize PoE.

CommScope has made significant contributions to the PoE standardization efforts in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as well as cabling standard groups in the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC), and European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC).

imVision is the first AIM solution to implement TIA, CENELEC, and ISO/IEC guidelines for tracking PoE energized cables in a cable bundle.
