Collaboration, QoE and regulators key to 2020 vision

Telecom players must learn how to partner well, harness disruption and focus on the user experience to survive the next ten years, and hope that regulators will give them the tools and spectrum necessary to do it.

That’s according to Mark Hukill, senior advisor for the Pacific Telecommunications Council, who offered a vision of the telecom industry in 2020 at the CommunicAsia2011 Summit Thursday.

Hukill said that in 2020 the companies left standing will be the ones that change their business models to focus more on collaborations and partnerships, deploy smart services customized to users, and address user needs and quality of experience.

Hukill also said that successful companies will be the ones with a three-pronged focus that plan out deployment, adoption and apps simultaneously rather than focus on just one aspect before considering the next.

Key trends in Asia that will impact the industry landscape of 2020 include the rise of augmented reality technology (which will be a major influence on device design), content providers becoming key buyers – and in some cases – builders of telecom capacity, the shifting of video becoming personalized and unbundled from distribution, and the increasingly centralized role of data centers.

However, he said, the success of telecom players in the next decade will depend heavily on favorable local government policies covering areas such as national broadband build-outs, competition and spectrum allocations.

“That’s a bit tricky, because every country has different issues, and everyone will take their own path,” Hukill said. “For example, compare the broadband policies in the US, China and Japan, and you see three very different approaches.”
