Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom has announced a trial 4K video streaming service using the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard.
Chunghwa is using equipment from CDN and VOD technology vendor Broadpeak for the trial project, including server and CDN manager equipment that supports the HEVC standard.
“Streaming video content with a 4K resolution takes up a lot of data,” Chunghwa Telecom deputy director of multimedia JH Lin said.
“Leveraging the HEVC standard, we’re able to efficiently compress 4K content without losing any of the video quality, making it easier and more affordable to store and transmit.”
With the trial equipment, Chunghwa will be able to deliver 4K video-on-demand content via unicast transfer, and non-video on demand content via multicast transmission.
IPTV set top box provider HwaCom is providing the end-user equipment for the trial streaming service.
“Chunghwa Telecom’s groundbreaking trial service is an excellent example of the amazing video quality today’s telecom operators can provide, as well as the increased efficiencies and cost savings that can be realized relying on the HEVC codec,” Broadpeak CEO Jacques Le Manq commented.
