Chunghwa Telecom has signed a MoU with China’s Skycloud Technology (China) to tap into the mainland’s booming cloud computing market, reports the Digitimes.

The partnership will see Skycloud help Chunghwa market the operator’s cloud computing infrastructure and application services and ICT-based intelligent services/solutions for home, business and government use in China, with Skycloud to provide hardware and system integration services.

Chunghwa Telecom will set up an exhibition center of its cloud computing product in a cloud computing park developed by Skycloud in Beijing, which is expected to be completed by the end of January.

Upon completion, Chunghwa Telecom will introduce its HiCloud CaaS (compute as a service) product to the China market in March-April 2011, the operator said.

The move will open the door for Chunghwa to grab a share of China’s burgeoning cloud computing business, which the Chinese government pinpointed as a major industry in its new-five year economic development plan which runs until 2015.

In Beijing alone, China is aiming to boost cloud computing industry revenues to as much as 200 billion yuan ($30 billion) from different sectors including infrastructure construction, application development and hardware device manufacturing.

Skycloud chairman Edward Tian said to promote cloud computing business, the company has set up 13 offices around China and will expand its nationwide promotion network to 35-40 offices in 2011.

In addition to Chunghwa Telecom, Skycloud has also been working with Taiwan-based IC design house VIA Technologies to set up a joint venture in China next year to develop terminal devices specifically for cloud computing application, Tian added.
