Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom will expand its LTE coverage and capacity using equipment provided by Ericsson.

Chunghwa will deploy LTE small cells as part of the expansion project, Ericsson said. The vendor is Chunghwa's sole supplier for the LTE core network, including the evolved packet core, and a key supplier for RAN equipment in populated areas.

Ericsson will also support Chunghwa's efforts to develop value-added business services for enterprise customers.

In a statement, Chunghwa president of mobile Lin Kuo-Feng said the expansion project is aimed at meeting demand for LTE services.

“The rapid growth of 4G subscriptions has exceeded our expectations. We see a huge data demand, and shifting consumer behavior to more data-centric services,” he said.

“We are pleased to keep leveraging Ericsson's global practices to offer the best-of-breed mobile network, advance user experience and to develop applications for enterprise customers.”

Ericsson estimates that 40% of the world's LTE traffic is carried over Ericsson networks. The company has rolled out 220 LTE RAN and EPC networks worldwide, and to date 170 of these have commercially launched.
