Mobile phones manufactured in China between January and June reached 212.59 million units, or an increase of 64.2% from the same period last year, the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), quoted by a Dow Jones report, said.
The Dow Jones report said first-half increase was slightly less than the 66% rise in the January-May period, but the amount produced accounted for more than 60% of the MII's full-year production target, issued in March, of 340 million mobile phones.
Last year, China made 303.7 million mobile phones, accounting for 37% of the 825 million mobile phones produced worldwide last year, the Dow Jones report said.
The report further said in the first half of this year, China's production of telephones for the personal handyphone system, a budget service used mainly in China that is akin to a citywide network of cordless phones, fell 30% from the year-earlier period to 6.09 million units.
