China Telecom has teamed up with Gemalto to develop a proof-of-concept for a method of securely connecting cars and the wider IoT.
The companies have presented a demo at Mobile World Congress Shanghai for using remote over-the-air provisioning to enable secure connectivity on mobile devices using Gemalto's LinqUs On-Demand Connectivity subscription management technology.
This technology will next be integrated into connected vehicle systems to allow China Telecom's auto-maker customers to offer instant connectivity in their cars.
Announcing the deal, China Telecom vice chief engineer Dr Liu Yuan said China is the world's fastest-growing automotive market, and traffic congestion and safety concerns are creating an increasing demand for cars with advanced navigation, telematics and safety features.
“Connected cars will form a major element of the Internet of Things, ” he said. “With an international standards organization specifying a single, uniform remote provisioning architecture for embedded UICC, there will be no need for our customers to plan for unique subscription at the manufacturing level, or build device variants for different operator.”
Experts predict that by 2025 every new car sold will have some form of IoT connectivity.
