China's three state-owned operators and Karamay Radio and Television Transmission Co have completed a project to provide full triple-play services to all residents in Karamay, a prefecture-level city in the north of Xinjiang.

The companies signed a deal in 2011 to jointly invest around $36 million for a pilot triple play service, Press Trust of Indiareported.

As of today, 100Mbps fiber connections have been installed into all residential areas of the city, allowing the operators to offer converged voice, video and data services.

The project s expected to have reduced telecom infrastructure investment by 75% and maintenance costs by 50%, and services are being provided at a 60% discount to the national average.

The operators now plan to use Karamay as a model city for the construction of triple-play networks in other areas.

This pilot also complements the Chinese government's plans to consolidate network construction among operators to avoid duplication and improve efficiency.

In line with this plan China Tower, a joint venture set up to overtake construction and operation of mobile towers in the country, opened for business last week. The JV plans to take over tower deployment for the operators starting next year.
