China Mobile, Ericsson and unmanned surface vessel (USV) company OceanAlpha have used Mobile World Congress to demonstrate a 5G-powered unmanned boat.

During a live Broadband IoT demo, the jointly-developed environmental smart vessel was set up in a pool 10km from the exhibition hall, allowing visitors to issue automatic driving instructions to the boat over 5G.

A HD video feed and other real-time information was delivered to a big screen in front of the console.

The environmental smart vessel is designed to quickly and efficiently resolve water pollution by collecting water quality monitoring data, identifying the cause of the pollutant with HD cameras and taking necessary measures to address these pollutants.

“Relying on 5G communication technology, OceanAlpha’s unmanned boat can conduct water area monitoring, VR back-end demonstration, water quality monitoring, remote application control, and autopilot,” OceanAlpha general manager Ran Zhang said.

“This will completely change the traditional operation of the hydrological survey, water quality sampling & monitoring, environmental law enforcement and other water ecological environment monitoring and supervision by effectively enhances data accuracy, reduces costs and improves work efficiency.”
