China Mobile yesterday signed a co-creation agreement with Alcatel-Lucent to jointly conduct development and test activities on a series of lightRadio projects at Alcatel-Lucent’s Stuttgart lab in Germany.

The initiative is designed help China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile provider with some 650 million subscribers, cope with the growing demand from customers for high-bandwidth mobile broadband services. The operator's sub base is expanding 11.2% annually an is increasingly adopting smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices that are driving massive demand for high-bandwidth mobile data services.

This co-creation agreement follows a non-binding MoU signed between Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile in mid 2011 and builds on the collaboration between the companies on the delivery of mobile broadband using TD-LTE technology.

China Mobile engineers have begun working with Alcatel-Lucent’s R&D team in the company’s lab in Stuttgart. The two companies will co-work on a series of lightRadio joint development projects including the cube-based radio, baseband unit pooling and redefining the radio architecture.

Alcatel-Lucent said the collaboration is expected to speed up the introduction of the lightRadio product prototype to the second half of the year.
