Two cable breaks over the weekend disrupted internet and mobile services for some subscribers of Philippines PLDT and its subsidiary, Smart.

Customers of mobile unit Smart in four cities reported interruptions to their mobile call and messaging capabilities on Saturday, including some which were left unable to send SMS, Minda Newsreported. The parent company's DSL services also experienced congestion.

The reported problems started at around 9am, but repair teams had restored services by the afternoon.

The four affected cities were Cagayan de Oro, Davao, General Santos and Koronadal, all part of the island of Mindano.

PLDT recently secured the acquisition of a controlling stake in rival mobile operator Digitel, completing the purchase in October after a long wait for regulatory approval.

The Philippines' Securities and Exchange Commission has just granted PLDT permission to extend the mandatory tender offer period for Digitel shares to January 16, Manila Stanard Todayreported.

Rival Globe had objected to the Digitel merger, over concerns it would give PLDT a dominant stake of the mobile sector. Globe services remained unaffected on Saturday.
