The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has been given the green light to proceed with a planned 4G auction next month, and four operators have applied to take part.

Earlier this week, the Bangladesh Supreme Court extended a stay on a lower court order to halt the auction, the Daily Starreported.

The High Court had stayed the auction in response to a petition from Banglalion Communications arguing that the notice inviting applications for 4G licenses contravenes 2008 wireless broadband guidelines stipulating that no auction will be held.

But with the Supreme Court reversing this decision the auction will now be cleared to go ahead.

The BTRC is now confident that 4G services will now be available by March. While BTRC has received five applications for 4G licenses, state-run Teletalk has not applied to take part in the auction itself.

Citycell, which was forced to suspend operations last year after its spectrum was revoked due to unpaid license fees, has confirmed plans to take part in the auction to allow the operator to resume offering services.

The auction is due to take part on February 13, with a mock auction to be held the day before.
