Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent started a collaborative project with the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Cuernavaca, to research cloud computing technologies.

As part of this project students from Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Cuernavaca will apply their knowledge and expertise to research network designs for cloud computing, which is used by companies and governments to link to thousands of processors connected to a fast communications network, where they share resources and store information for millions of users.

The project reflects a growing focus on the part of Bell Labs on research into cloud networking technologies.

Dr. Oscar Javier González, Alcatel-Lucent’s researcher, said “Bell Labs is one of the greatest sources of innovation in the telecommunications industry worldwide. It currently has more than 33,000 active patents, and 12 Bell Labs researchers have shared in 7 Nobel prizes. Support for research is in our DNA, hence the importance of fostering academic projects like the one in which we are currently engaged”.

The students will work on the “Graphic Display in Cloud Computing Topology”, where tools will be developed to help visualize, monitor and debug applications running in a large-scale, distributed computing environment.
