Australia's Internet Industry Association (IIA) has drafted a code encouraging ISPs to actively check their networks for botnet-infected PCs, and inform the owners of the breach.
In some cases where owners cannot be contacted, the code also includes a provision to disconnect those PCs from the internet.
The draft code will be voluntary, the IIA said, but it expects to receive widespread support for the proposal.
Some 68 ISPs are already involved in the Australian Internet Security Initiative, the association said, which aims to track down botnet-infected PCs. The program reports 10,000 security breaches a day.
The draft also proposes establishing a reporting function for serious threats - particularly those that threaten national security – and mechanisms for educating internet users about security threats and how to prevent them.
The public consultation period for the code ends on October 30.
Australia is home to around 100,000 botnet-infested PCs, the IIA said.
