Taiwanese electronics company Asus has announced the first smartphone to support both Gigabit LTE and 802.11ad multi-gigabit Wi-Fi technologies.

The Asus Zenfone 4, part of the recently announced family of Zenfone devices, will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform to support very high speed LTE-Advanced and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Asus said the device supports Cat 12 LTE-Advanced networking with three-channel carrier aggregation for download speeds of up to 600Mbps.

When using the device as a Wi-Fi hotspot, the Snaprdrgon platform is designed to provide end-to-end gigabit wireless connectivity with 802.11ad access and Gigabit LTE backhaul on compatible networks even in crowded locations, Qualcomm added.

As with the upcoming 5G new radio standard, 802.11ad uses 60-GHz millimeter wave spectrum to exponentially increase data carrying capacity compared to existing cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

The chipset also has integrated 802.11ac 2x2 multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) technology.
