Hong Kong-based satellite operator APT Datamatrix (APT) announced to build a Tier III+ data center to offer cloud management services.
APT is a subsidiary of APT Satellite Company that operates five in-orbit satellites, covering about 75% of the world's population. It will soon offer data center and cloud management services through its purpose-built network operation center in Tai Po.
APT's network operation center is a self-owned property located about 10 km away from industrial and commercial areas like Tsuen Wan, Tseung Kwan O and Chai Wan. This makes it "an ideal secondary production site" for businesses, APT said in a media statement.
Initially a satellite operator, APT now plans to leverage its satellite footprint to provide data center services to its customers.
Empowered with satellite connectivity, APT's data center has an additional satellite emergency backup route in case wires were accidentally cut off. It also offers a one-stop solution to TV broadcasters with a range of satellite related services including satellite TV broadcast, webcasting and video streaming directly to audiences or cable-head ends.
Hu Ya Jun, general manager of APT Datamatrix, said, "We see great growth potential in data center market. The challenging bit, however, was how to install a unique value proposition in our service in a timely manner, and at the same time ensure reliability and flexibility in our services to meet the needs of the complex and fast changing enterprise IT environment."
The Tier III+ data center is designed to support maritime communication and navigation via satellite and cloud management services.
