Apple has begun removing bikinis and other risqué content from the App Store as part of a new “no-skin” policy.

Apple has introduced seven new rules, including no bikinis or ice-skating tights, or silhouettes of body shapes, according to web developer Jon Atherton.

The Wall Street Journalsaid the clean-up effort comes as the firm begins marketing its new iPad tablet, which Apple intends to aim at families and schools.

"If we find these apps contain inappropriate material, we remove them and request the developer make any necessary changes in order to be distributed by Apple," Apple told the WSJ.

While the move prompted protests, some bloggers, like The Unofficial Apple Weblog, welcomed it. “I'm sick of seeing a "Hot Asians" app show up in every category,” it said.

Apps showing nudity or graphic sex are already banned by Apple.
