Apple's WWDC keynote came and went without the rumored announcement of the iPhone 6 or Apple iWatch, but the company did unveil the next generation of iOS.

The iOS 8 operating system adds functionality including adding voice and video support to iMessage, an iCloud photo library for cross-device photo editing and sharing and new developer tools.

Apple said it has enhanced the iOS predictive text feature to make it more intelligent. iOS 8 learns your writing style and adjusts the predictive feature accordingly.

It will take into account whether the user is writing a more casual message or a formal email, and also adjust its suggestions based on who is being communicated with.

The feature will at launch be available in 14 countries including Japan, Australia and China, and will suggest different words and phrases depending on the region.

The OS upgrade also adds a new Health app, an integrated dashboard and hub for health and fitness apps.

It can collect and store data including heart rate, calories burned, blood sugar or cholesterol, and will include an emergency card with important health information accessible through the device's lock screen.

At launch, iOS 8 will be compatible with the iPhone 4S and above, the 5th generation iPod Touch and the iPad 2 or newer.

Perhaps in an attempt to steal Apple's thunder, Samsung has this week unveiled its first planned Tizen handset, the Samsung Z, which will go on sale in Russia in the third quarter.
