The PON infrastructure provides the needed high bandwidth, but bandwidth capacity alone does not ensure the required end-user quality of experience that operators need to provide differentiated services. Advanced quality of service mechanisms must also be built into the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) equipment.
This paper describes the QoS challenges that must be addressed in the deployment of GPON services, illustrates the adverse effects of poorly performing networks, and suggests how GPON equipment should be employed to meet the challenges.
