Google’s Android was the fastest mover in the US smartphone marketing in Q2, stealing market share from all of its main rivals.

In yet more evidence of Android’s arrival as a force in the mobile market, the open-source platform increased its market share by almost a third to oust Microsoft from third place, according to ComScore.

Its share of the smartphone market rose from 12% to 17%, putting it behind RIM (39.3%) and Apple (23.8%).

Both of the two leaders lost share to Android, with RIM off 1.8 percentage points and Apple down 1.3 points.

Samsung remains the biggest US handset brand, increasing its market share by one point to 23.1%. Korean rival LG retained the second spot on 21.2%, despite falling back 0.6 points.
