Japan's NTT Docomo has selected IoT blockchain developer AnApp Technologies as one of the participants in its 5G Open Partner Program.

AnApp is the developer behind IOTW, a new cryptocurrency for IoT applications designed to enable “micro mining” using low power IoT devices. This has the potential to obviate the main expense making mining for other cryptocurrencies financially unviable.

The platform is designed so that IOTW's proof of assignment and mico-mining blockchain algorithms can be added to IoT devices without additional hardware costs.

AnApp co-founder and CEO Frederick Leung said the platform will support companies that are looking to develop solutions to help revolutionize Docomo's product set, including IoT devices, HD video, apps and smartphones.

"By participating in this program, IOTW is willing to contribute our innovative technologies to spread IoT solutions for the Japanese society, as well as promoting the development of services using 5G provided by NTT Docomo,” he said.

“We are very certain that our cooperation can potentially impact everybody's daily life, end users can benefit from it, accelerating the sales of IoT devices that are connected to the NTT Docomo network. [Our solution] will enable NTT Docomo to collect big data, [while] end users will fully benefit from micro-mining."
