Taiwan's Ambit Microsystems has revealed plans to commence 4G operations using its 700-MHz and 900-MHz band spectrum holdings on May 15.

The operator, an affiliate of manufacturing giant Hon Hai (Foxconn), is the last of Taiwan's 4G licensees to be launching services, DigiTimesreported.

Ambit is attempting to merge with Asia-Pacific Telecom (APT) and offer joint 4G services, but has run into resistance to its plan from regulators as well as rival operators.

Due to the delay Ambit will accordingly need to commence offering 4G services by June 3 to retain its license, as per the conditions stipulated in the license terms.

Ambit acquired 20 MHz of 700-MHz spectrum and 20 MHz in the 900-MHz band during the $4 billion spectrum auction in 2013.

APT itself launched 4G services in late December. Established rivals Chunghwa Telecom., Taiwan Mobile, Far Eastone and Taiwan Star Cellular have all also introduced 4G.
