The Australia Japan Cable consortium has tripled lit capacity on its 12,700km subsea cable system by implementing an upgrade from Infinera.

Infinera has upgraded the Infinera DTN-X network powering the cable system with its fourth generation Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE) optical engine.

AJC first deployed Infinera's subsea cable solution in 2014. The vendor's Instant Bandwidth capability allows AJC to quickly activate and pay for additional capacity as needed, reducing the initial cost of deployment.

“Infinera’s newest optical engine – ICE4 – enabled AJC to easily add more capacity per fiber pair,” AJC CEO David Crofts said.

“The ICE4 upgrade to our DTN-X network from Infinera is performing better than advertised, allowing AJC to easily deliver multi-terabit capacity with low power consumption and the reliability required for subsea networks.”

The AJC cable system first launched in 2001 and was upgraded with 100G technology in 2014. The latest upgrade has given the cable a total capacity of around 5Tbps between Australia, Guam and Japan, with the capacity to upgrade to over 10Tbps.
