Thailand’s chief telecom regulator believes that AIS’s plans to launch 3G services piggy-backing off TOT’s 1900 MHz network could be anti-competitive.

Gen Choochart Promprasit, the chairman of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), believes the plan could violate several NTC competition regulations.

It’s believed that AIS plans to use the TOT’s network in Bangkok could potentially jeopardize the five Thai firms that plan to launch MVNO services also on TOT’s network.

The issue of 3G spectrum at 2100 MHz has been delayed indefinitely due to bureaucratic quarrelling over whether the NTC or proposed unified regulator, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, has the power to oversee the country’s 3Gauction.

Moreover, the new NTC board is up in the air, as one of the commission’s proposed directors is being investigated by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).
