India's Bharti Airtel has abolished roaming charges for its African customers when they are using the operator's networks in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The operator will start automatically offering roaming-free charges to African travellers, without requiring them to sign up for a separate service, The Hindu Business Linesaid.

Airtel already offers on-network roaming-free services between the 17 African countries it operates in.

Airtel Africa Chief Marketing Officer Andre Beyers said the company's goal “is to provide affordable and relevant mobile communication solutions across borders.”

Bharti Airtel has around 60 million customers in Africa. The company bought into the market through the $10.7 billion acquisition of Zain's African assets in 2010, and has since expanded into more countries on the continent.
