AsiaSat has reached a deal to provide transponder capacity and uplinking services for in-flight entertainment and connectivity service provider Aircom Pacific.

Under the deal, Aircom Pacific will use Ka-band and Ku-band capacity on AsiaSat 7 and AsiaSat 8 to provide services for airlines flying routes over Asia.

Services will include Wi-Fi broadband, streaming TV, videos and gaming, cellular connectivity and real-time duty free shopping.

“We chose AsiaSat as our satellite partner because it offers us the capacity, coverage and expertise in aero services necessary to ensure a successful implementation in the coming calendar year,” Aircom Pacific CMO Alan Gallant commented.

“The airline industry is intensely competitive. In-flight entertainment and connectivity will be the key for airlines to achieve differentiation and to boost passenger loyalty.”

AsiaSat is a Hong Kong-listed satellite operator. The company currently operates six satellites covering two-thirds of the world's population.

AsiaSat recently announced plans to deploy Asia's first dedicated Ultra HD broadcast platform, initially over the AsiaSat 4.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified AsiaSat as a Thai-listed satellite operator. It is in fact listed in Hong Kong. Telecomasia.net welcomes all clarifications and corrections.
