Damage to the Asia-America Gateway subsea cable has reportedly disrupted internet connections in Southeast Asia.
The cable has been damaged on the link between Hong Kong and Vietnam, according to Vietnamese media.
The damage caused disruptions and slowdowns in international internet access across the country, Than Nien Newssaid. Each of Vietnam's four major ISPs use the cable.
This marks the second major outage on the AAG since July. But ISPs do not expect this outage to be as severe as the July incident because the industry has added resiliency to their international links.
Vietnam may not be the only market to be affected. TheNextWebnotes that a recent slowdown in internet speeds in Thailand that has been blamed on the alleged move by the junta to ramp up online surveillance efforts might instead be the fault of the cable outage.
The report adds that the July outage took two weeks to be repaired, meaning residual effects of the damage could be felt for some time.
The 20,000km AAG cable was deployed by a consortium of operators including CAT Telecom, PLDT, StarHub, Viettel, Telekom Malaysia and VNPT.
